Blogging Etiquette
Well, before we get too far into this whole blogging thing, we figure we had better set some ground rules. We went on-line and read articles on blogging etiquette by Deborah Ng, Tamar Weinberg, Zona Marie Tan, and Adam Mclane . Please click on the link, and read at least one of these articles.
Based on some insight from these articles, and thinking about our own goals for this blog, we have come up with the following rule:
Be respectful, responsible, reflective, and relevant!
Keep in mind that all of your responses to any post are available for all other Methods students and teachers to read. Please do not use inappropriate language or private jokes. (Pretend Mrs. Gillespie and/or Mr. Smith will be reading it!)
If you a quoting a website be sure to cite the author, or better yet set up a link so that we can take a look at the original document if we choose!
HINT: We highly recommend that you respond to the post BEFORE you read the responses of other people. Your response needs to be original and in your own words; this is much easier to do before you read what others wrote. However, you may respond to someone else’s post, in addition to writing your own, if you would like.

Please reflect on the rule above. Why do you think that it is important to follow this rule when responding to the blog post or to someone else’s response? (Reworded: What would some of the unintended consequences be of not following this rule?)Please remember to sign in first, and then

It's really important to site your sources and speak in your own words because if you steal it, even accidently, its against the law and you can get in a lot of trouble for plagiarism.

I think that its important to follow the rules because if you don't you could end up offending someone. Everyone can see what you post online, and they will judge you so you need to be careful what you post.

It's important to be respectful because for opinions to really be shared, people have to be civil with eachother. Being responsible with blogging involves thinking before you post. For example one would not use inappropriate language. It's important to be reflective so you can learn from what you read and consider others' points. Make sure to post only things that are relevant to the topic, to keep the conversation focused. It's important to fallow all these rules so blogging can be an efficiant and enjoyable experience for all.

ReplyDeleteBlogging is all about expressing your opinions. It's a judgement that should be shown to the world. There are limits to it. It's important to comment on something respectfully. Even if you disagree with the question then say it nicely. Blogging something for other people to read it should reflect it on something that you are all writing about. Being responsible about posting a blog is important. Even though some people may not feel fond of this whole blogging thing, at least you can express your opinion about what the question is asking and try to answer it in the best possible answer. Reflect and be relevent on what your are trying to answer towards a question. People should express their beliefs and their opinions in a positive way because they will benefit from it.

It is really important to follow the rules while you are on the blog, because something you say might be offensive to another teacher or student. It is also important that you site your work, because you can get in a lot of trouble for plagiarism and also the teachers want to see your work, and not someone elses.

Being on face book, blogs, or similar sites, now is like being in public, or out on the street. When you are on a blog you should behave as well if not better than when you are on the street, because whatever you do or say will be on the internet forever. If you are polite and respectful you will not have to worry about employers or other important people digging up your internet history.

For the purposes of Ms. Milender's HHS Methods blog, etiquette is most important in the sense of respect. It is important to be respectful due to the fact that some blogs (including this one) are public. Saying anything disrespectful may result in damaging a person's reputation, and such ignorant actions cause a person to look inconsiderate of readers who wish to post something relevant.

I think that this rule is important to follow because these all these things are relevant in the real world as well as the internet, so it is good to practice etiquette here on the blog. I also believe it is important to follow these rules because it is just as bad to bully and harass people on the internet as in real life, so the rules are here so you don't do anything that you would never say in person. Its very important to be mindful of what you say on a blog. Otherwise you could be seen as stupid or rude. And just like in school, you're not allowed to pretend someone else's work is your own. That's cheating. It is also polite to respond to comments people have given you because they cared enough to try to help you.

If you aren't being respectful with what you write other people might not want to blog anymore. If you use someones else's work its called plagiarism and thats agains the law. So its important to follow the rules and make sure that you come up with your own way of wording things. If you just copy what someone else says your not really thinking about it and you won't learn much. An important aspect of this rule is that it is umportant to remember that when you are blogging you are doing it on the internet which is open to the public. Because there is pretty much open access, it is important not to post anything that you would not be comfortable with people reading. This rule is important. It is important because you can hurt peoples feelings if you make fun of their ideas. Being revelent is helpfull because it is extremely annoying when people say random stuff and you have to read through all of that to the good stuff. It is also annoying when people are not responsible because they become stupid and do dumb stuff. and finally it is annoying when people arnt reflective that is becasuse you get random posts.

I think that following these four rules is very important to keeping a blog manageable and to keep anyone from getting offended. I think these rules are great guidelines to blogs and blog posting, I think a lot of people forget that people can see what they write and that they shouldn't write mean things for the heck of it. People are free to write their opinions, and to disagree but they shouldn't be hurtful. You should always think of the major consequences of your actions, and that people are have way more courage behind their computer screen (as Debrah ng said). Also relevance is really important becaus no one wants to get spammed!

If we didn't have this rule, the above could happen and perhaps the blog would be taken down. This is bad because the blog is a very helpful resource. ReplyDeleteI don't think or believe that these rules must be followed, but that people should have no choice (in fact they don't have a choice) but to cite any work that is not theirs. People should try to use their own words as much as possible but you should still cite any work that is not yours no matter what you have translated into your own words. People who don't cite their sources for any reason, intended or not, are assumed to be representing their own work and they risk being accused of plagiarism.

Here on the internet, there are a few individuals whom people like me like to call "trolls". Trolls are people who comment or post offensive or corrosive material or language to a video or webpage. If you use different sources online, you should site them all. Use your own words and if you are taking something word for word from another page, put it in quotes and site it. You should type on the blog the way you would talk to a teacher or respected adult in real life, so not swearing, or taking information that is not yours.

When quoting someone online, be sure to post a link to the page you got the information from. Be sure that you also know how to spell their last name when quoting them. It's very rude to spell someone's name incorrectly when it's easy to fine on the post.
